Remaining Vigilant This Hurricane Season

Even in the midst of hurricane season, it can be easy to let our guard down, but condo associations in Florida must remain as prepared and vigilant as ever through the summer months and well into fall. While you already know the kind of damage and destruction a hurricane can cause, it never hurts to hear some reminders about how your condo association can remain prepared and responsive in the event that a major storm makes landfall in South Florida.

Review Your Emergency Plan

An emergency response plan (ERP) is a comprehensive document that includes critical policies, procedures, contact information, and other relevant information for your COA or HOA. You’ll want to ensure it contains the following:

  • A master site plan
  • An evacuation plan
  • Current contact information for residents and key vendors, including your association attorney, emergency service providers, and insurance company
  • Insurance documents and a comprehensive property inventory
Prepare Your Property

It’s never too late to take on grounds maintenance and inspect common areas for vulnerabilities. Even the smallest items can become projectiles in a storm, so trimming trees and shrubs and ensuring a tidy property can help minimize potential damage from debris. You should also double-check gutters and downspouts and keep drainage systems clear to prevent flooding.

Communicate with Residents

Now is also a good time to remind residents about the importance of storm preparation and ensure all contact information is up to date. You might also consider hosting a community meeting to answer questions and alleviate any concerns.
